John Hersey Michaelis (Aug. 21, 1912-Oct. 20, 1985) was born in San Francisco, California. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1936, then from the Command and General Staff School in 1942. After service in World War II, Michaelis was commanding general of the U.S. Army, Alaska, from 1959 to 1962, U.S. Army V Corps, Federal Republic of Germany, from 1962 to 1963. David B. Eskind (1909-1992), a radio scriptwriter and producer, was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He studied writing under Thornton Wilder at the University of Chicago, from which he graduated in 1934. For the next several years he wrote radio scripts for NBC and CBS. During World War II he served in the Army in the Pacific as a writer-producer of Army education and information programs.
